Some dogs don’t just arrive in your life—they find you. For Kath and her family, that dog was Dozer.
Nineteen months ago, they were grieving the loss of Rocky, their beloved RSPCA rescue. “He was one of the greatest dogs that ever lived,” Kath said. “We were heartbroken. He wasn’t just a dog, he was family.
”Eventually, they knew they were ready to welcome another big dog. “We kept looking at the RSPCA website, which I encourage everyone to do,” Kath said. That’s where they saw Dozer and his eight siblings, all surrendered.
“We went in, looked at him, and fell in love,” she said. “I think that’s how it happens; you don’t choose them; they choose you. Dozer was our heart dog.”
Dozer, affectionately called their “kind, generous, giraffe dog,” fit seamlessly into their multi dog household. Despite his size, he’s a gregarious, playful companion who brought even more warmth and laughter into their lives.
Recently, Dozer charmed everyone on set as the ambassador for RSPCA Lottery No. 87, with his paw-some pals, camera-ready Miss Tommy and mischievous Tidda.
Kath’s connection to the RSPCA runs deep. She remembers her late friend Michael Beatty, the long-time face of the organisation, who first encouraged her to adopt Rocky. His influence, and the RSPCA’s work, continue to inspire her.
“Dogs can’t speak for themselves. So, the RSPCA speaks for then. Two legs, four legs, feathers, fur…whatever it is.” Kath says.
Kath and Dozer’s story is a powerful reminder of how adoption changes lives, not just for the animals, but for the people who love them.
Kath’s final piece of advice, “if you can buy just one ticket, do it. A dog, a cat, or even a magpie will thank you.”
